Beginning back in 1831 in Rhode Island, Gorham Manufacturing Company was famous for creating silver spoons during a time when it was illegal to import silver from other countries. American silver manufacturing flourished from 1850-1940 and Gorham Manufacturing grew and became an influential company within silver manufacturing.
Of all of Gorhams patterns the Chantilly pattern became the most famous. The White House as well as other wealthy Americans purchased special designs from Gorham for dinner parties and events where they wanted to showcase their wealth. Today Gorham flatware is used aboard Air Force One as President George Bush's choice of silver flatware.
